I’ve always wondered if it’s possible for you to increase your IQ. Neuroscience is a very interesting field to me, and I’ve gone on quite the journey trying to improve myself. I’ve tried modafinil along with other smart drugs, I’ve tried playing chess, and I’ve even delved into the world of psychedelics.
Some people claim that diet is the secret to increasing your IQ. Others claim that it’s about nootropics or exercise, and some even claim that your IQ is fixed by your genetics. Despite this, there’s a lot of evidence to show that you actually can increase your IQ…and you can do it very quickly.
A while back I discovered a very simple, effective game that can increase your IQ by up to 2.75 points an hour—you won’t be able to play it for more than 15 minutes though, because it’s extremely difficult.
Regardless, this game is one of the most effective tools that I’ve used to increase my IQ, and I believe that if you use it as well, you’ll reap massive rewards.
Play Dual N’ Back
The secret, my friends, is a little game known as Dual N’ Back. Launched in 2008, it’s been downloaded almost 1 million times, and for good reason. Numerous studies have found it to be highly effective at improving your fluid intelligence, or in other words, your IQ.
Yes, that’s right—there’s scientific evidence proving that playing this game can increase your IQ by up to 2.75 points per hour. Now to put this in perspective, the average human IQ is 100. Einstein’s IQ is 160. Do you see how big of a difference just 15, 30, or 45 points can make?
I’ve been using it around 5 times a week, for 15-20 minutes each time. At first, your brain will fucking hate it, because it takes an enormous amount of effort to play this game. Just playing it for 15 minutes almost completely exhausts my will power and focus; I can’t play any longer than that.
But the rewards are worth it. You’ll start to notice a change within just a week, if not a few days. You’ll start to feel more mental clarity, things will be easier to remember, and you won’t lose your keys anymore.
I got my IQ tested (online) and it jumped from 134 to 150…so I guess that’s really 16 points. Others have reported similar results. I know it may be hard to believe that such a simple game could increase your IQ by a whopping 15 points a month, but it’s true.
Try it out for yourself. You won’t regret it. Out of everything in this list, Dual N’ Back is probably the most effective way to increase your IQ…but if you combine it with the following tips? Oh god, you’re in for a wild experience.
Use Smart Drugs
Smart drugs have recently been gaining some steam in the bio-hacking and fitness subcultures of Western America. Supposedly, these drugs can increase your cognition by a ridiculous amount. Is it fact or fiction?
Well, I decided to find out a while back. I kept a 2 week log of my experience with Alpha Brain, and to be blunt, I’m not at all disappointed with the results. Within just a week, I started to feel like I could remember things much more easily, I could speak much more fluently, and I could focus much more easily.
Well, it turns out that research has backed my experience—Onnit recently released a clinical double blind placebo study PROVING that Alpha Brain is effective at increasing cognition.
In other words, if you want to increase your IQ, Alpha Brain is a great way to go about doing it. In addition to Alpha Brain, consider checking out some other smart drugs:
- Modafinil (a controlled substance in the US)
- Kratom (great for euphoria and creativity)
- L-Theanine + Coffee (my favorite, because it’s incredibly safe)
My favorite smart drugs are the ones that are the most natural; not that I have anything against kratom or modafinil, thought. Modafinil makes me feel like Bradley Cooper from Limitless, and in fact, I wrote a guide on how to , because I love it so much.
As for the Alpha Brain? I take two pills every single morning when I first wake up. Then a few hours later I have a cup of coffee with around 200mg L-Theanine, which is an extract from green tea that works synergistically with caffeine. These are safe to take every day, so I do just that.
Bulletproof Diet
As I’ve said before, the Bulletproof Diet is one of the best diets for losing weight, if not THE best diet for losing weight. The reason why is because it puts your body into a state of ketosis, which is basically “fat burning mode,” for all of you non-biology nerds.
In addition to this, the Bulletproof Diet is also one of the best diets for boosting your IQ. The reason why is because it’s extremely high in healthy fats, low-toxin vegetables, and it’s low in anything that might sap mental power.
Fat was demonized in the 1950’s as something that leads to heart disease, but new research is showing that this is absolutely not the case. In fact, healthy fats are actually CRUCIAL for building new brain cells and repairing old ones. In other words, fat will help increase your IQ.
It has to be the right type of fat, though. Avoid trans fats like the plague, because there’s a massive correlation between these and heart disease. But saturated fats and monounsaturated fats? Eat as much as you can get.
Many people report feeling sharper, more focused, and more intelligent when they’re on the Bulletproof Diet. This is what I experienced, as well.
You’ll start to feel a difference within two weeks on the bulletproof diet, and it’s only uphill from there. You’ll start to feel like you can remember things more easily, focus more clearly, and you’ll feel like you have more mental energy to get through the day. In my experience, this is one of the best diets to nourish your brain and increase your IQ.
Become a Renaissance Man
The second that you stop growing and learning, you die—in fact, some scientists have speculated that degenerative brain diseases are actually due to the fact that older people stop learning. They just watch Wheel of Fortune for 5 hours a day and completely unplug from life.
Your brain is meant to be constantly taking in new information—this is why you must become a Renaissance man. Draw water from all sources, and draw connections that nobody else can see.
There’s a reason why my list of the best books for men contains books about fitness, dating, philosophy, psychology, and more. I believe that every man should be well-rounded, and if you want to increase your IQ, there’s no way around this.
When you learn about different topics, your brain constantly makes new connections. It gets better at storing and information, and it starts to see the “underlying picture,” that it didn’t see before. Learning about music, for example, exercises parts of your brain that learning about math or science won’t.
In other words, if you want to increase your IQ, you must become well-versed in a wide range of topics:
- Language
- The Arts (Poetry, Literature, Paintings, Sculptures, etc.)
- Mathematics/Finance
- Music (Learn to Play an Instrument)
- Business/Marketing
- Philosophy (Eastern and Western)
- Health/Biology
- History/Geography
Some of the most impressive men, all throughout history, have attributed their successes to seemingly unrelated fields. Steve Jobs attributed many of the ideas he had for Apple to a calligraphy class that he took in college. George Lucas had the idea for Star Wars when he was studying Taoism. Studying a wide range of topics will not only make you successful, but it will also increase your IQ as your brain makes new neural connections.
Do HIIT
Studies have consistently linked physical activity to brain power, and it’s no wonder why—when you exercise, you increase blood flow to your brain, and jack your endorphins through the roof. But I don’t recommend just any kind of cardiovascular exercise, however.
The most time-efficient and effective way to increase your IQ using physical activity, is to do High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT.
HIIT is essentially a regimen with several intervals of sprinting and walking. For example, a typical HIIT regimen might look something like this:
- Sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 1 minute
- Sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 1 minute
- Sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 1 minute
- Sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 1 minute
- Sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 1 minute
- Sprint for 30 seconds, rest for 1 minute
Yes, I know, it’s repetitive, but do you see the point? By doing cardiovascular exercise like this, not only will you boost your testosterone levels, but you’ll get a huge surge of brain-boosting endorphins, AND you’ll increase blood flow to the brain.
These three things have all been linked to better brain health—testosterone makes you happy and alert, endorphins reduce stress which indirectly improves cognition, and blood flow to the brain is just better all around.
If you really want to take it to the next level, you can do weight training as well. I talk more about this in my eBook “Body of an Alpha,” but we can save that for another article. If you guys have any questions, comments, or concerns, let me know down below. And, as always, I’ll see you next time around.
Jon, I went to the link you provided for Dual N’ Back. The problem is that it is only designed for windows or Mac neither of which I have used for years now. I have a chromebook and after downloading it, I got the message that it wasn’t compatible with my software. Also the Chrome Web Store doesn’t have any thing comparable. I’m not sure my iPad would be able to get it either. Do you have any ideas on how I might be able to get a hold of the D N’ B program? I really, really want to use it.
Not sure. .. have you checked the app store? They may have made it into an app by now (EDIT: it’s on the apple store! Just saw it)
Thanks, Jon. I’ve now seen it and downloaded it on my iPad. I really should have checked the Apple store first before commenting. The version they have doesn’t vary the square’s color though the app is still great!
I’ve tried them, but never really got into them. Dual N Back will DEFINITELY help increase memory, I highly recommend it.
My IQ is 108.
